What We Do
At Usawa Health Initiative, we’re committed to building responsive and sustainable ecosystems for sexual and reproductive health services. Our work is focused on four thematic areas:
What We Do
Capacity enhancement
Health service delivery
Strategic partnerships
Research and Advocacy
Capacity enhancement
The community pharmacy (CP) model project: under this project, we trained CP workers from over 20 pharmacies around Kampala and Wakiso and enhanced their knowledge and skills on contraceptive methods availed at community pharmacies; this initiative not only provided them with vital information on the different types of contraceptives, including their efficacy, usage, and potential side effects, but also equipped them with communication strategies to effectively discuss these methods with clients. Additionally, this project played a crucial role in improving the attitudes of these CP workers towards contraception by fostering a greater understanding of its importance in public health, thereby encouraging them to engage with customers openly and supportively, ultimately leading to increased accessibility and acceptance of contraceptive options within the community.

Health service delivery
We have organized and implemented multiple
medical camps and mobile clinics in partnership with other organisations in the rural areas of Wakiso
and Buloba districts; in these camps, we provide free STI screening services, which help in the early detection and treatment of infections, alongside free
contraceptives to promote family planning and reproductive health. Our dedicated team also offers comprehensive family planning counselling to educate individuals and couples on various methods available, ensuring they make informed choices. In addition, we provide free treatment and referrals for those requiring further medical attention, striving to improve the overall health outcomes in the communities we serve. Our aim is not only to address immediate health needs but also to foster a sustainable model of health awareness and access for the long term.
Strategic partnerships
Usawa Health Initiative is a member of over four Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) coalitions in Uganda. For instance, it collaborates with the Coalition for Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (CSMMUA), which is dedicated to the prevention of maternal mortality attributable to unsafe abortion, concentrating on advocacy and raising awareness to improve maternal health outcomes. Additionally, Usawa Health Initiative engages with Ubuntu health service providers, who strive to ensure equitable access to comprehensive healthcare services within communities, thereby promoting overall wellness. Furthermore, through the Usawa health consortium, we work alongside various stakeholders to enhance the quality of reproductive health services, placing a priority on education and support for families. This participation underscores Usawa Health Initiative’s unwavering commitment to addressing critical health issues and cultivating a collaborative environment for advancing health initiatives throughout Uganda and beyond.
